THE BIG ANOUNCEMENT

Inside the Governor’s office Charles pay a visit to Shelly’s father “Aw! This is an official business.” with the presence of the City Mayor he gave status report about the construction of the City Grand Terminal is about to finish this week. All the remaining works are some few details and finishing touches and be done in no time. The Governor appreciated Charles. Well done engineer, I saw it with my own eyes how the construction is doing and also reading Shelly’s report about the construction, you all have done a great job. It is extravagant, the design were exquisite. I’m sure Mayor Chan here would be delighted to accept that project when turn over. 

Of course Governor Tan, This would be a big help in our City. I already been hearing a rumor from our constituents because they are so pleased with this project they are ready to campaign for your candidacy for free next election. Shelly’s father smiled… enough of the politics Mayor besides it’s too early for the next election we are here to serve people for the benefits of everybody. Let the people decide who they will put in the office. Let’s discus when would be the inauguration. What about next month on the second week that would give us enough time to prepare some things. Mayor Chan replied. Charles, next month second week are ok with that? That would be great Governor. Said Charles. Alright then see you all next month in the inauguration.

Shelly meet Charles outside Governor’s office with excitement hugging him, and he hug back. I’m so excited! Yeeeey! Finally it’s done. Congratulation! Let’s go lunch shall we? Sure! But this time you pay. Said Charles. Why not! Shelly said with tickling voice. Then they go out for lunch in the cafeteria in front of the provincial building.

On the inauguration day. Governor Tan and Mayor Chan holding a huge scissor to cut the ribbon you can hear the crowd cheering citizens were excited of the new City Grand Terminal. Charles and his CEO were there also with all the dignitaries. After the ceremony they went into a private chamber for dinner. Just after Governor Tan finished eating, Shelly came near and whisper. Dad can I talk to you a minute. She pulled him and Charles in the corner and said….Dad, I am engage with Charles. Governor Tan and Charles were surprised! Behind Charles mind…. “WHAT MADE HER DO THAT? I MEAN,,, WE HAD BEEN DATING BUT I DID NOT PROPUSE TO HER YET. WELL, I LOVED HER ANAYWAY” then he smiled.

Governor Tan have no intention of shaming his daughter but to support her. He congratulate Charles,  raise a glass of wine and announce to all the dignitaries in the room. Everyone! Everyone I have announcement to make, in continuation of our celebration today, I am happy to announce that my daughter Shelly is now engage with Charles. Everyone Cheer and congratulate Shelly and Charles...

Part 3

SLIGHT PROBLEM

One Morning in the City Grand Terminal Construction site, a wooden round table outside the bunkhouse sitting there Charles and Shelly, after discussing about the construction project Charles mentioned about Ben's plan that all four of them could hang out together. Hey Shelly! Do you remember what Ben said about all four of us could hang out together sometimes? Yeah! What about it? She replayed. What about we will do it this Friday. Are you free this Friday? Yeah! I am, I have nothing else to do after five. That's great!, will you contact Robert make sure he is available? I know you two have been communicating for quite sometimes now. Shelly feeling uncomfortable.... at the back of her head thought.... “OH MY GOD! WHY DID HE KNOW THAT ROBERT AND I HAD BEEN COMMUNICATING EACH OTHER? IS HE THINKING THAT I LIKE ROBERT TOO? OH DEAR, IF HE KNOWS ABOUT THAT HE MIGHT NOT BE SEEING WITH ME ANYMORE.” RUBBING HER HEAD AS IF IT’S ACHING AND FIXING HER HAIR THEN CALM HERSELF. Ah! Yes! I will do that. All settled then, I will have Ben book us when he is on duty on that restaurant tonight.

When Friday came, everything is set in the restaurant. Charles and Shelly came first in a fine casual attire. Robert came in next driving 2 hours from the University with his Ford Ranger pickup truck, he is still with his University uniform. Charles stood up to meet Robert halfway, embracing him and said. How I’m glad to see you man! How are you? Hey! You look like a professor on that suite!  Hi! Nice to see you friend. Shelly said. Robert smiled… I am a Professor! All three laugh. Both sitting down around the table and chatter continued……..

In a little while Ben came in and go straight to the wine cellar. Hey! Look there’s Ben! Shelly exclaimed. Robert looking at Ben wearing dirty white colored T-shirt with short pants and leather sandals on his feet wondering…. “What the hick he doing there in the wine cellar? And what is he wearing? Am I to deserve a friend like that in this fine restaurant?  Ah! He said that with a high look.

Ben came out from the cellar with a bucket of ice and Champaign with the smile in his face approaching… I’m sorry guys I made you wait, I should have come earlier. Putting the bucket and Champaign on the table Charles replied it’s alright Ben, we’re just here for a minute or two or something. Please have a sit. Hey! Robert I admire this friend of ours so much. He is a hard working guy! He sells fish balls on the street corners all day and he works here in this restaurant as a waiter at night.

What! Robert exclaimed. Don’t you tell me you are still that poor guys since high school? Look at me man, I’m already a Math Professor! He laugh hard, mockingly he continued trying to embarrass Ben. Now! Tell me you did not finish college are you? Ben head down humiliated but Robert did not give him a change to speak. Oh! I know I know your mom and dad did put you on college right! Hahahahahaha! You went fishing with your dad! That’s why it smells like fish in here. Whoosh fishy! Fishy! Fishy! You couldn’t even afford to buy a new clothes man! How did you manage to pay for the ice and Champaign? Here, I’ll repay you. Opening his wallete pull out some bills hand it out to Ben. Shelly making a smiley face favoring Robert.

Putting on Ben’s shoes Charles stood up…. Snap out of it Robert! What’s with you man! And what’s with fishing! I went fishing sometimes and its fun. We are all friends here, this supposed to be a meaningful reunion! Let’s all have some fun tonight alright! Robert then quickly change the topic… pouring Champaign on his glass said: Anyway I’m already hungry, where’s our food? He calls the waiter… Hey! Waiter! The waiter came. Sir, your food are ready to be serve in a moment. The waiter then spoke to Ben in a soft voice. My apology Sir, there has a slight problem in the kitchen we need your assistance. Ben then excuse his friends. Would you excuse me I will be back in a minute? As Ben walk towards the kitchen all his friends were eyes rounded wondering what’s going on. Why did the waiter spoke to him like that! And he calls him Sir. Shelly calls back the waiter, hey! What’s what? What’s with Ben? Waiter replied: Ah! Ma’am, Sir, my apologies there is a little mixed up with your second menu and that’s Sir Ben’s specialty that’s why we need him to fix it. Wow! this is getting better and better! Not only has he sold fish balls by day, and a waiter by night but also a cook! Ha! What’s he cooking a fish? Or a fish balls may be? I hope he is a good cook! Robert said that proudly of himself. Enough of it Robert Charles said pondering what Ben might be in that restaurant. Before returning back to the kitchen the waiter said to them. Excuse me Sir, Ma’am, I have to get back to the kitchen I'll be serving your food, By the way, Sir Ben is the good owner of this fine restaurant. Hearing this from the waiter all three looked surprised, they could hardly believe how their poor old friend become the owner of the restaurant.

All the things had been said to Ben, Robert melted in shame almost could not speak a word living his friends in the restaurant. Ah, Charles, Shelly, excuse a minute I have to use the bathroom but went other way and hurried home.

Part 2

LOVER’S IN THE WIND

During the election day. Shelly’s father run for the office of Governor and won via unanimous votes. He then started the road concreting projects, building more infrastructure in every Municipalities, and an extravagant Grand Terminal in the City which by change Charles’s Construction Firm managing the projects and he is the chief engineer.

As for Shelly her father gave her a position in the province he made her the Provincial Project Manager. Wait a minute! “An Under Board Nurse become a Provincial Project Manager?” Well, there’s some things in the politics that we’d never understand. "SO BE IT" Let's just proceed to our story…..

One day Charles and Shelly met at the City Grand Terminal project site. While Charles manning the construction site, Shelly also went there to inspect how it is constructed. She ask one of the construction workers where is the site engineer, the worker pointed her out to the big truck behind the bunkhouse. Charles setting on his big truck noticing a pretty gal approaching “I THINK I KNOW THIS GAL RIGHT HERE” Hey! Shelly! He shouted. I knew that was you! What on earth you are doing here? Well, I understand that you are the site engineer, and it just happened that I am the Provincial Project Manager and I will see to it that your project here be done nicely and according to the standards… So you’ve better watch out I keep an eye on you! “Speaking seriously but with since of humor” Oh Yes! Yes! Yes! Of course Charles replied with smile on his face. Because they were high school friend, their chatter went on and on talking about what a day they have way back in high school and exchange experiences during colleges, until they are having this mutual understanding with each other that both don’t discuss about.

Months later both always met in the construction site. Every time Charles are there to see how the construction is doing, Shelly also is there to inspect the project at her own line of work. Without expressing their feelings to each other, they are like two love birds sitting on a tree branch feeling the breeze tickling the feathers beneath their wings. And times both are like a dry firewood and match waiting enough heat for the fire to strike. But both have no idea of what’s going on, they just flow where the wind blows.

One joyous night, Charles ask Shelly a dinner date to a newly opened fine restaurant witch he already booked a special place beforehand. Both sitting in a nice cozy place of the restaurant chatting, enjoying the night together waiting for their orders to be served, with a blink of an eye both notice a tall guy of a fairly dark skin went inside the kitchen. “I know that guy!” both spoke the phrase at the same time. A minute later a tall guy with fairly dark skin came out from the kitchen serving their orders. Ben! Ben! It was you! Both exclaimed. How are you buddy! We’ve missed you so much! Said Charles. Yes! We’ve missed you men! Shelly said awkwardly with a little blush remembering those night at the fine Diner on the Mountain top running away from Ben afraid that she might marry a fish ball vendor for the rest of her life.

Yes! I missed both of you and Robert too. How'd I wish we all could hang out sometimes, you know I’d been always dreaming of that day to come. Said Ben. Yeah! Yeah! We’ll make that happen I promise, I  will take care of that okay! said Charles.

Look at you! You look good on that waiter suite! Shelly spoke sneeringly. You look great men! What else you do aside from being this? Charles said with his hands palm open towards Ben. Well, I sell fish balls by day and work here as waiter from 6 to 11pm every night. Charles embraces Ben and said “I am so proud of you men so proud of you.”

 Being so happy meeting his two friends Ben acted professionally as a good worker of the restaurant. I am so happy to see you both in this fine place tonight, but I believed this is your date and I am the waiter assigned specially for you so, you can ask me anything you want to order I’ll be standing on that corner, if you have need of anything just raise your hand and I’ll be at your service. Enjoy the rest of the evening. He said this while pouring Champaign in their glass. As the night continued Charles and Shelly enjoyed their dinner date chatting, eating laughing together with a soft instrumental playing in the background.

PART 1

THE FISHERMEN'S SON

Ben, Charles, Robert and shelly were best friends since high school. They have strong bond on their friendship, caring, loving and protecting each other with all they can and sharing all kinds of things that others don’t have. Ben was raise in a poor family, his father were small time fisherman and his mother sales the fish in the wet market. While Robert and Shelly grew in a not so wealthy family. Robert’s parents were business folks, they own the business building in the wet Market where Ben’s Mother sells fish and some other business stablisments in the City. Shelly’s parents are renowned politicians in their province. And as for Charles he just grew in a very well off family. He grew up in a golden platter with silver fork and spoon.

After graduating high school Charles, Robert and Shelly all three went to different Universities while Ben, he is a good hearted boy, he knew his parents income were not enough to put him to college. So spent his whole life dedicated helping his parents to make their living. He went with his father fishing, helping his mother selling the fish in the wet market. He did not stop working hard maximizing all his time to earn for a living and save funds for future plan, with one thing on his mind, “MY PARENTS ARE GETTING OLDER, I HAVE TO WORK EXTRA HARD TO SAVE FUNDS TO RUN A BUSINESS SO THAT THEY CAN STAY AT HOME AND ENJOY THE REST OF THEIR TIME ON EARTH”.

A year after when Charles, Robert and Shelly are now in second year on college. Ben bought a larger fishing boat to help his father and hired a fisherman that his father would no longer go on fishing but rather manage the fisherman’s he hired. In a little while he run into a fish ball business and his mother manages a group of women making a homemade fish balls. They no longer sell fish in the wet market, all the fishes their hired fisherman caught go straight to their small homemade fish ball making group.

Years went by Charles, Robert and Shelly graduated college and return home to their provinces. Charles become a highly honored licensed civil engineer, Robert become a Math teacher in the middle school and Shelly, she finished Nursing but unable to pursue her carrier because she could not pass the board exam no matter how many times she tried.

At this point of time, that they all grew up in separate ways and everyone has their own new sets of friends, and their friendship bonds also went cold. Charles manage to make his new circles of engineers while working in a very well know huge company. Robert also become a highly decorated Math professor in a University.

Ben is still dreaming of their high school friendship bond to come back and they could enjoy hanging around once again. Although Ben and Shelly meet sometimes and talk about how close their friendship was during high school. But she could not linger a little longer thinking that Ben is just a fish ball vendor unlike Charles and Robert they are way more famous. Secretly Ben hold his feelings with Shelly since high school, he is so in love with her but afraid to show it to her because he belong to a poor family. His parents knows about what he felt on Shelly and they are such a big encourager for Ben to go on and tell her that he loved her.

In spite of being jobless, Shelly did not stop of dreaming to get rich. Because her parents were renowned politicians in their province, she can afford herself to go on parties with other rich guys and most often hang out with Charles and Robert. She love hanging out whoever she wanted specially the rich guys. The only thing in her mind to marry a rich guy that she could enjoy most of her life. Unknowingly Charles also had feelings for her and that felling grow stronger that he wanted shelly to be his wife in the near future.

One day, Ben and Shelly bump each other on the Mardi Gras, he then use this opportunity to spend time with her, enjoying together, watching this joyous events, when evening come they were both hungry, he then invited her to dine with him in a fine cozy diner in town at the mountain top viewing all the city lights below and also they could have a clear view of the fireworks from the Mardi Gras. While dinning a sweet jazz music softly playing in the background, Ben could no longer hold his feelings that he kept for a long time, holding her hand look to her eyes and express what he felt for her since they were high School.

Shelly was so surprised did not expect that moment to happened, imagining her life with Ben a fish ball vendor. “IF I SAY YES! THEN MY LIFE WOULD BE OVER. I’LL BE SELLING FISH BALLS IN THE CITY STREET CORNERS MY WHOLE LIFE!” Without father much thinking and feeling mortified she answered “Ben NO! NO! NO!” then hurried out leaving Ben in the Diner.

With no hope for his love with Shelly, Ben focuses on his fish ball business. Speedily he opened 20 more fish balls stalls all over the town but instructed those other fish ball vendors not to tell anyone that he own all these fish ball stalls but they were competitors. Aside from fish ball business Ben ventured other more businesses like buying 10 larger fishing boats until he exported fish to the other cities and neighboring provinces. And many other legal business he interred into that no one knows he secretly owned many other business establishments in their City.
